Private Duty

By Faith Baldwin

“You look like a million dollars in government bonds, that is to say, expensive, hard to acquire, extremely valuable but not exhibiting much interest.”

Pretty Carolyn Cutler generally knew her own mind after three long years of work to win the right to sign herself Registered Nurse. But now that she is successfully out on her own, she is facing a problem her nursing training alone can’t solve. The three men in her life each have their particular attractions, but she isn’t sure which—if any—of them has what it takes to be her man. But these men know their own minds, too, and what each of them intends is to win Carolyn for his own. First there is Dr. Livingston, whom Carolyn had idolized while she was in training, but now she isn’t sure whether she loves the man or the surgeon. Then there is her employer, recent widower Derek Williams, and his grief-stricken young children, all of whom desperately need her tender care. And last there is the boyish Bill Hamilton, whose reputation as a rogue is well known by many of his discarded young women across town. Do any of these men have the courage to win Carolyn’s independent and proud heart?

“Miss Baldwin is sure of her ground. She knows this fascinating world; and best of all, she knows how to tell a good story. This is good, popular, romantic stuff, and Miss Baldwin once more wins our plaudits.” May 1936, The San Francisco Examiner
